Children…Why Do They Have To Break Everything? October 15, 2008

Ellie-Bean still likes to stick everything in her mouth and we have been trying to break her of this habit by catching her when she sticks something in and saying “Not in your mouth”.  This usually works and the item comes out, our cell phones however have been salivated on for too long.  Keith and I have had our phones almost as long as we’ve had The Bean, and she loves to play with them.  It’s one of the only items that will calm her down and refocus her attention during a tantrum.  She’s been playing with them and sticking them in her mouth for about a year now, and we are starting to see the effects.  First one of the buttons fell off the front of my phone.  No problem, I just stuck it back on.  But now part of Keith’s faceplate has fallen off.  I guess now we need to decide if we want a screaming child and good looking phones, or a quiet child and trashed phones.  I might be wrong, but I think that option number two comes with fewer headaches.

I’m pretty sure she had something to do with that giant zit on my forehead too.

Yes, you certainly have to pick your battles with the kids. I was just telling Jenny yesterday how Malia used to love to destroy / rip up books – especially the expensive pop-up books. Honestly there were days I just let her, thinking, “At least this will keep her quiet for 15 minutes.” Fortunately she’s past that stage, and Ellie will be too.
